My name is Rustom Appoo, and I am a husband, a father to two lovely children, a doctor, a partner at seven dental practices, and a founder of Dentistry for a Cause.
Dr. Rustom Appoo didn’t grow up in Edmonton.
He just chose it.
He grew up all over the world. His father’s work took him to Iran, London, Dubai, Indian, Japan, Houston, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. But he’s been here practicing dentistry since 2000, and has no plans to leave.
After completing his education he’d go on to get his first dental job. He also started working with underserved native communities untill 2006 when he bought his second practice. His work-ethic has played into the success he enjoys today.
When he’s not working, he enjoys sports, travel, and meeting his friends for coffee or a meal. He’s a foodie and a dog-lover.
Rustom is a highly compassionate person who has a great grasp of what’s important in life. Years ago he launched Dentistry for a Cause. Every day, once a year, the dentists and staff at each of the practices agree to donate their work for a day. The money collected for this day of dentistry is then used to purchase and set up homes for orphaned children in India. The money collected for this day of dentistry is used to build homes for orphaned children and support local organizations like the hospital.
In India, many parentless children are left with no choice but to survive on the streets. Appoo wants to change that. We have just committed to building a 3rd home in India which will have 25 beds. The first home had 12 beds and the 2nd had 25. He intends to keep building them, year after year, making the biggest impact he can make so long as he continues working.
“We may not have the ability to establish the biggest Charitable fund” Dr. Appoo admits, “but its great to know we can still make a small difference.”
Rustom bought his first clinic.
Then flew straight to propose to Daneesh.
He bought the Belle Rive Dental Clinic practice from the former owner in February of 2001. The day he bought the clinic he flew straight down to India to propose to his wife, Daneesh.
Dr. Appoo loves dentistry, but he also loves the challenges that come with running a business. By 2006 he’d purchased the practice known as The Dentists at Northgate. It was his first big project, but by the time he was done he’d taken this 5-chair Edmonton practice and turned it into a 10-chair practice.
Today he also owns Devon Dental Associates, Queen Street Dental Center, Affinity Dental Kingsway, City Square Dental Center, and Cambie Broadway Dental.
Dentistry For A Cause
Dentistry for a Cause was started by Dr Rustom Appoo in 2016.
Initially we did free dentistry for a day in his clinics, however we soon realized we wanted to make a larger impact. So starting in 2017 we did an extra day of dentistry in 2 of our offices Belle Rive Dental Clinic and The Dentists at Northgate.
All the staff volunteered their time, and we donated our entire billings for that day towards a few local causes that were important to our office and a main overseas cause, supporting underprivileged children. What started as an in-house project of Rustom’s offices has grown, this year with the addition of several other clinics joining the cause in Alberta and British Columbia.
